"Percussion vs Percussion" (2007-present)
This is a video game for performer vs. performer written for percussionists Robert Esler and Lisa Tolentino. The performers are presented with scores that are algorithmically generated as the piece progresses. They can choose to interpret the score in several ways; each way of interpreting the score is a move in the game. Their playing is constrained not just by the notes written in the score, but by the moves they'd like to make. In the game, each player is attempting to collect more tokens than the other. The game is sonified and spatially projected.
Percussion vs. Perccussion is a work in progress. The compositional work is done; the software is under development. It will be premiered at the PLAY festival in Phoenix, AZ, March 23-24.
